Jodhpur is the second largest city of the state Rajasthan after Jaipur popularly known as the Blue City. It is situated on the edge of Thar Desert & was founded by Rajput chief Rao Jodha in 1459. This city is surrounded by a tall stonewall of about 10 km which has eight gates in different directions.
As the city is situated near the Thar Desert, its climate is typically desert type. In summer the temperature varies between 36 to 42 degrees C and in winter it is arround 15 to 27 degrees C. The maxium rain fall is about 32 cms. November to March is the pleasant period to visit the city.
The important festivals of this region are Gangaur, Teej & Marwar which show Rajasthani culture through folk songs, dances & music.
Attractions in Jodhpur
The major attractions of the city are various historical monuments including forts, palaces & temples which symbolizes the region's religious, cultural past.
Mehrangarh Fort : The majestic fort is situated on a hilltop & spread over an area of 5 km. This was built by Rao Jodha in 1459 AD. This has seven gates like Jayapol, Fateh Pol & Loha Pol. There is a museum inside the fort which houses various antique objects like ornaments & weapons.
Jaswant Thada : This white marble monument was built in 1899 in the memory of Maharaja Jaswant II.
Umaid Palace - This palace built up of red sandstone & marble is now the residence of the royal family of Jodhpur. A part of the palace has been converted into a luxury hotel and in the other side there is a excellent museum housing several antique objects.
Government Museum : The museum is located in the middle of Umaid garden which has a large collection of weapons, textiles, manuscripts, paintings, portraits, local art & crafts.
